What Are the Most Common Medications for Hair Loss?

Perhaps the most common of all medications for hair loss is Finasteride, more commonly known as Propecia, but can also be marketed as Proscar, Fincar, Finax, Finpecia, Finast, Prosteride, Finasterid, or Gefina.

What is Finasteride?

Finasteride is an oral tablet, also known as Proscar and Propecia which can be used to treat hair loss. Finasteride works by decreasing the amount of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in your body while blocking an enzyme known as Type II alpha-reductase, this can lead to increased hair growth and reduce the risk of further hair loss on your head. Finasteride may also increase the rate of hair growth and increase the hair density.

What results can we expect?

To see results for this treatment, medication must be taken daily for a minimum of 3 months, though we recommend patients continue for 6 months to allow the medication to take effect. Unfortunately, if you discontinue using the medication the results will be reversed.
