Do you know the stages of hair growth?

Updated: Jul 25

Hair grows from the follicle underneath the skin. The hair is ‘fed’ by blood vessels at the base of the follicle, which gives it the nourishment it needs to grow. Understanding the stages of your natural hair cycle can help solve common hair issues you may encounter and help to boost hair growth.

Each hair undergoes four stages: anagen, catagen, telogen, and exogen. Every hair is at a different stage of the growth cycle.

The anagen phase is known as the Active phase. This phase lasts two to seven years and determines the length of our hair. It is when the cells in the root divide so more new hair forms.

The catagen phase: Your hair cycle enters a short transitional phase that lasts about ten days. The hair follicle shrinks and detaches from the dermal papilla. Approximately 3% of all hairs are in this stage at any time.Telogen Phase: This is a resting period phase that lasts around three months. It’s when strands remain in their follicles but are not actively growing. Exogen: The final phase of the hair growth cycle is where the old hair sheds, and new hair continues to grow. Approximately 50 to 150 inches can fall out daily, this is considered to be normal hair shedding. That’s why it’s important to ensure your diet is rich in specific nutrients to maintain healthy hair growth.
